What is a utility model?

A utility model is an exclusive right to a technical invention – a faster and lighter option to a patent. A utility model is well-suited for smaller technical inventions, such as structures, devices and chemical compounds with a short lifespan.

The invention must:

  • Be new
  • Involve an inventive step (fewer requirements than a patent)
  • Be industrially applicable

Methods cannot be protected with a utility model but, for example, chemical compounds, food and pharmaceuticals can be protected.

Registration and duration

A utility model application is filed in writing with the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH).

The application includes:

  • A description of the invention
  • At least one claim
  • A drawing, if necessary

The PRH will check the formalities, but it will not assess the novelty or inventive aspect of the invention, which makes the processing quick and cost-effective. The protection is valid for four years at first, after which it may be extended for a total duration of ten years at most.

Why choose the utility model?

A utility model is suitable in the following situations:

  • The invention is concrete and ready to use
  • You need quick and affordable protection
  • Patent processing would be unnecessarily burdensome

A utility model is part of a larger IP strategy, for example, for testing the market potential before actual patenting.
